Itinerary Overview

Day 1 - Welcome to Costa Rica!: After my family and I arrived in San Jose we were met by Costa Rica Outdoors and taken to the Hotel Intercontinental, a 4-star hotel where we had three double rooms.

Day 2 - Arenal Volcano: In the morning we were picked up by a private van and a bilingual driver for a scenic 3-hour drive into the San Carlos Valley and the Arenal Volcano where we checked into Los Lagos Lodge and three double rooms with a volcano view from the patio. In the afternoon we were went on a canopy ascent. We saw howler monkeys and tropical birds. we had done something similar in Mexico but this was much more exciting.

Day 3 - Free Day: This day was free for the hot springs, relaxing and a short nature hike.

Day 4 - Pacific Coast: We were picked up in the morning by a shuttle bus for the drive to Quepos on the central Pacific coast. They dropped us off at the Hotel Kamuk where we had three double rooms. It was located in the center of town, just across the road from the beach and had a restaurant, bar, casino and big pool.

Days 5, 6 and 7 - Deep Sea Fishing: We fished all three days on a brand new 30-foot charter boat with an English-speaking captain and mate. It was fully rigged with a tower and good quality tackle. We only took an hour run from shore but caught sails, blue and black marlin and a few tuna.

Day 8 - Free Day: Another welcome free-day. We relaxed on the beach, did some snorkeling, and checked out Manuel Antonio National Park.

Day 9 - Return to San Jose: In the morning we were driven back to San Jose and dropped off at the Intercontinental where we had three double rooms, as in the beginning of the trip.

Day 10 - Central Valley Tour: In the morning we were picked up for a tour of a nearby coffee plantation, an active volcano and some beautiful waterfalls. We traveled through the mountains and cloud forests of the central highlands and then into the warm tropical lowland rainforests. We had breakfast and lunch on the road at local eateries and at the end of the day were treated to a relaxing boat ride down the Sarapiqui River. In only a couple of hours we saw monkeys, crocodiles and exotic birds and were then taken back to our hotel in San Jose.

Day 11 - Departure: Picked up at the hotel and transferred to the airport for our flight home.
